A medida que la pandemia de COVID-19-19 continúa afectando a casi todos los aspectos de nuestra comunidad, Ivanhoe Sol está explorando formas adicionales de proveer información importante.
Este mes, Ivanhoe Sol ha comenzado una serie de seminarios mensuales que se pueden ver en nuestra página de Facebook. Nuestro primer video se titula “COVID-19 y problemas de vivienda en el condado de Tulare” y nuestro objetivo era que los trabajadores “esenciales” hablan de su experiencia con COVID-19 y el argumento a favor de una moratoria en todos los desalojos durante el pandemia.
Muchos residentes del condado de Tulare han perdido empleos y salarios debido a la pandemia y enfrentan varios problemas adicionales, especialmente desalojos y una mayor exposición a COVID-
19-19 a medida que los casos en Tulare continúan aumentando.
Según la Agencia de Salud y Servicios Humanos del Condado de Tulare, hasta el 22 de mayo, se habían detectado 1,641 casos positivos totales de COVID-19 en el Condado de Tulare con 19 casos en el área de Ivanhoe. Si bien ha habido 835 personas cuya fuente de infección ha sido identificada, aproximadamente la mitad u 806 personas tienen fuentes desconocidas de infección o están actualmente bajo investigación.
Los participantes de nuestro evento incluyeron a trabajadores comunitarios como el Dr. Omar Guzmán de Kaweah-Delta Centro Médico, Blanca Escobedo del Consejo de Liderazgo para Justicia y Responsabilidad, Esmeralda García del Consejo Comunitario de Ivanhoe y Andrea Kelly con FoodLink para el Condado de Tulare. Cada orador abordó cómo COVID-19 ha estado afectando su trabajo y todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que COVID-19-19 ha estado haciendo que los problemas preexistentes como la falta de vivienda y el acceso a la atención médica sean aún más difíciles para los residentes del condado de Tulare.

Todos nuestros participantes estuvieron de acuerdo en que se han realizado muchos esfuerzos para ayudar a los miembros de la comunidad que han sido afectados por la pandemia, todos estuvieron de acuerdo en que el Condado de Tulare debería usar su autoridad para detener todos los desalojos para proteger a los residentes del Condado de Tulare durante la pandemia.
Andrea Kelly es la Coordinadora de Participación Voluntaria de FoodLink, una organización en Exeter que es el único banco de alimentos que sirve a las comunidades rurales en el Condado de Tulare. Su organización siente casi de inmediato los impactos de la pandemia en las comunidades que necesitan alimentos. Por ejemplo, Andrea comentó que “en el lado oeste de Tulare atendimos a 465 personas, en algunas áreas la necesidad se ha duplicado o triplicado”.
Si bien la demanda en sus distribuciones regulares está aumentando y FoodLink también está expandiendo su área de servicio ya que algunas despensas de alimentos se han cerrado durante la pandemia. Con el fin de continuar sirviendo a la comunidad del condado de Tulare, FoodLink ha comenzado a hacer distribuciones de alimentos para conducir donde los residentes pueden recoger sus alimentos en sus vehículos. Sin embargo, estas nuevas medidas para proteger la salud pública también han significado que FoodLink necesite voluntarios adicionales. Kelly comentó: “Solo necesitábamos siete o ocho personas, ahora necesitamos veinte o veinticinco” para cada distribución.
Cuando se le preguntó por qué su organización apoya la detención de los desalojos, Kelly dijo: “dada la cantidad de personas que están sin trabajo y que dependen de nuestros servicios solo para alimentos, solo puedo imaginar con qué más están luchando para pagar la renta, pagar sus facturas de servicios públicos y para sus otras necesidades básicas”. El Dr. Omar Guzmán trabaja como médico de la sala de emergencias en el Centro Médico Kaweah-Delta. Dijo: «No queremos que las personas tengan que tomar una decisión entre acceder a la atención médica y pagar el alquiler, creo que vivimos en un área médicamente desatendida donde las personas carecen de acceso a la atención primaria, así como a la atención especializada en general”.
Blanca Escobedo es una organizadora comunitaria del condado de Tulare para la organización sin fines de lucro, Consejo de Liderazgo para Justicia y Responsabilidad. Ella ha estado abogando con otros residentes del condado de Tulare para proteger a los residentes de los desalojos causados por la pandemia COVID-19-19 con el fin de proteger la salud pública y garantizar que las familias tengan un lugar seguro donde quedarse hasta que se desarrolle un tratamiento.
