Open Letter to Ivanhoe Youth

Dear Ivanhoe Youth, 

 I am writing because I would like to address some concerns and questions that have come up during these difficult times we are living in. The Covid-19 pandemic has truly impacted you all in ways which have changed your lives completely. Your daily routines have changed in a way where many of you are still trying to figure out how to navigate school, home ,and most importantly, socializing with friends and loved ones. 

Waking up every morning, getting ready for school and hanging out with your friends and teachers is no longer the case for most of you. Many of you are dealing with feelings of loss, fear, and confusion but I am here to let you know you are not alone.

Change is difficult for most of us, including parents like myself. This is important for you to understand because you are not the only one feeling confused or lost during these changes. These changes have made it hard for you because being at school at times seemed to be the only “normal” you knew and understood. 

What has changed for you, personally?

Do you truly realize the way these changes have impacted the way you communicate with others and you have gone from face to face contact to communicating through technology? Let’s face it: communication through social media, zoom, gaming and text is completely comfortable for some when we compare it face to face and in-person. However, some of you have not been able to communicate in this manner either because you do not have access to technology or are uncomfortable communicating.

I need you to help by checking in on one another during these times. These kinds of conversations are difficult to have with our friends and people we truly care about but they are possible and can help our community healing. 

I challenge and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and reach out to two friends or loved ones this month. A simple question like, “Hey, how are you doing?” or saying  “I have been thinking about you and wanted to know if there is anything you need?” can go very far and impact that friend or loved one in a great way. 

When was the last time you asked someone these things?

If you do this then you would be utilizing and building your own communication skills and encouraging your friend or loved one to do the same. This would be great and impact our community with positivity and encouragement. 

We need communication. We need contact. We need community. Good luck!
