Nos sentimos aliviados cuando las hormigas se quedan afuera en el jardín, en lugar de desfilar por la cocina. Pero, ¿son buenas las hormigas en el jardín?

Las hormigas son una fuente de alimento para las aves, comen otros insectos y ayudan con la descomposición de los restos de plantas y animales. Mueven y airean el suelo y transportan semillas bajo tierra, dispersándolas para crear nuevas plantas.

Las hormigas también tienen cualidades menos deseables para el jardinero y nuestras plantas. Las hormigas cosechadoras pueden causar picazón al jardinero. Las picaduras de hormigas rojas importadas pueden causar ronchas y reacciones graves en algunas personas. Para nuestras plantas y árboles, tienen una serie de malos hábitos.

LAS HORMIGAS APOYAN LAS PLAGAS EN LOS ÁRBOLES Y LAS PLANTAS

Las hormigas ahuyentan a los insectos beneficiosos, como las mariquitas y las crisopas, y sus larvas, que son depredadores de las plagas de las plantas. Este comportamiento es para proteger una plaga productora de melaza para que la hormiga pueda tener la melaza como fuente de alimento. Esto puede significar un aumento de pulgones, escamas, moscas blancas, cochinillas y psílidos en la planta o árbol.

A medida que las plagas de las plantas como los pulgones, las escamas y los psílidos se alimentan de las hojas de las plantas, se llenan tanto de azúcares vegetales que excretan el exceso, que es la melaza. Cuando las hormigas vienen a alimentarse de la melaza, también “protegerán” la escama o el pulgón atacando a otros insectos que normalmente atacarían a la plaga. Con menos depredadores naturales, los insectos “malos” aumentan en número, lo que resulta en una mayor producción de melaza. La melaza en las hojas hace que la planta sea más propensa a los hongos de fumagina. Especialmente durante el estrés del calor del verano, la fumagina inhibe la transpiración y la producción de clorofila por parte de las hojas. Estos insectos malos también pueden transmitir enfermedades fúngicas, bacterianas y virales de una planta a otra mientras se alimentan.

Las hormigas también se sienten atraídas por las frutas, los jugos de frutas y la miel, que pueden dañar los cultivos o las colmenas de abejas.

APRENDA SOBRE LAS HORMIGAS PARA REDUCIR SUS MALAS CUALIDADES

Las hormigas son insectos sociales que viven en colonias muy organizadas y cada hormiga nace en su función de por vida. Cuando no nos están causando problemas, su ética de trabajo es bastante impresionante. La reina pone huevos y cuida las larvas. Las hormigas obreras son la mayoría de la colonia, recolectan comida, cuidan las larvas, construyen túneles y defienden la colonia. Las hormigas generalmente anidan en el suelo, cerca de una fuente de alimento y humedad. Los nidos de hormigas argentinas suelen estar justo debajo de la superficie del suelo. Las hormigas son más activas a partir de la primavera, aumentan en julio y menos activas después de octubre. Utilizarán tuberías de riego como una carretera conveniente.

Las especies de hormigas al aire libre en nuestra área incluyen hormigas argentinas, hormigas pavimentadoras, hormigas arborícolas aterciopeladas, hormigas ladrones, hormigas cosechadoras y hormigas rojas de fuego importadas. Algunas especies, como las hormigas carpinteras, las hormigas faraón, las hormigas domésticas olorosas, las hormigas ladronas y las hormigas argentinas, también se encontrarán en el interior en su búsqueda de alimento. Algunas hormigas prefieren principalmente los dulces, otras también se sienten atraídas por las proteínas o la grasa. La comida de la hormiga carpintera son los dulces, su nombre proviene de crear nidos en madera.

MANEJO DE INVASIONES DE HORMIGAS EN ÁRBOLES Y PLANTAS La

exclusión de las hormigas de sus fuentes de alimento incluye el uso de barreras, como mantillo alrededor de árboles y arbustos, que ralentiza los movimientos de las hormigas, y productos pegajosos que bloquean el paso de las hormigas. Para evitar dañar el árbol, estos ungüentos muy pegajosos deben aplicarse a un trozo de tela de árbol o cinta adhesiva que se envuelve alrededor del tronco del árbol.

Compruebe si hay grifos y aspersores con fugas que atraigan a las hormigas que buscan agua. Mantenga las ramas más bajas de los árboles fuera del suelo y limpie cualquier fruta caída con regularidad.

Las hormigas recolectoras pueden morir con agua y jabón, limpiador de ventanas o insecticida, pero esto no impedirá que la colonia continúe siguiendo el rastro de olor de los trabajadores anteriores. La aplicación de insecticidas también reduce la cantidad de insectos beneficiosos que consumen plagas de plantas.

Las estaciones de cebo para hormigas proporcionan un insecticida mezclado con un material dulce para atraer a las hormigas obreras. Las hormigas llevan pequeñas cantidades del cebo de regreso al nido y, finalmente, pueden matar a toda la colonia. El cebo funciona lentamente, por lo que los trabajadores se lo dan al resto de la colonia antes de que mueran. Las estaciones de cebo se pueden comprar listas para instalar o en estaciones recargables más grandes. Las preferencias de cebo de la hormiga pueden variar durante la temporada, así que pruebe con un producto diferente si el problema continúa. Revise la estación con regularidad, ya que puede secarse con el calor o volverse rancia. Evite el uso de aerosoles insecticidas cuando utilice la estación de cebo. Coloque la estación cerca del sendero de las hormigas, pero no donde los niños y las mascotas puedan alcanzarla fácilmente.

Una buena práctica para evitar introducir plagas de plantas en su jardín es aislar una nueva planta cuando la lleve a casa. Obsérvelo durante al menos un día, revise el suelo, la parte inferior de las hojas y los tallos, las ramas y el tronco en busca de autostopistas no deseados.
