First Car Parade in Ivanhoe

By Mayra Becerra

Shelter in Place has created a new normal in our small community. This has led to quiet streets and children encouraged to stay inside or in their backyards. As the world shifts to a different level of normal our children have become restless. Some kids are missing their friends, their teachers, their recess, and their school environment.

In response, the staff at Ivanhoe Elementary School pulled together to provide a much welcomed Car Parade for the community they serve. Students anxiously waited in their yards, some with signs, as  Ivanhoe Elementary staff members and their families drove their cars honking and waving as they passed by.

When I reached out to Mr. Rodriguez, the Ivanhoe School Principal, to see what had sparked this idea he stated, “Mrs. Rodriguez our 2nd grade teacher had the idea.” Hats off to her! As a spectator to this great event, I can say it was an emotional moment.

Many parents shared their appreciation and excitement on social media. Many videos were streamed through different platforms. “This moved me greatly. They even made me cry. This act of kindness is appreciated,” parent Chita Bravo stated online.

The community felt the love and when I asked Mr. Rodriguez how he and his staff  felt driving through town his response was “I cried. And so did some of our staff members. It’s been very difficult for some of us not being able to see our students and families. We MISS them!”

Of course I had to ask if there will be another parade. Although the answer was no, Mr Rodriguez did say teachers would be connecting with students weekly. This is good news, since students and staff were not able to say goodbye to each other. At this moment it is unclear when students will be able to return to an in-person classroom.
